We decided to check out Tio’s Tamales on a Saturday afternoon for lunch. It’s in a small space right on Nu’uanu Ave. (same building as Nu’uanu Okazuya). If you choose to dine-in, they’ve got a few tables and counter space. We opted to order take-out and eat at home. The food was ready fairly quickly, and there seemed to be a nice stream of customers coming in, as we waited for our food.
My date ordered a single taco and a carne asada burrito. The taco was filled with shredded chicken, onions, and tomato. It came with a red sauce that was spicy and delicious. He enjoyed it, and would order it again.
The burritos that we ordered were large and filling. I got the shrimp burrito from the Specials menu. It was filled with several large shrimp, beans, rice, chile verde, and cheese. I would definitely get it again, if it was being offered on the menu. My date enjoyed his carne asada burrito and said he’d like to try it “smothered.” For a few dollars more, you can get any of the burritos “smothered” in chile verde, red chile, or both sauces. It is then topped with cheese, lettuce, tomato, and onion. How delicious does that sound?
