*Updated 5/2021: The Spalding House was closed in December 2019. It is no longer open to the public. Visit HoMa at its Beretania St. location.
If you’re looking to escape the hustle and bustle of Honolulu without actually leaving the city, I recommend The Spalding House. Located in Makiki Heights, you can enjoy beautiful scenery and a large collection of contemporary art.
You are greeted by some amazing pieces, as you walk from the parking lot to the entrance of the museum.

Admission is $20 for adults and $10 for locals with i.d. Children 17 and younger are free. Your admission is also good for use on the same day at the Honolulu Museum of Art on Beretania St. Admission is free the first Wednesday and the third Sunday of the month. A family day is hosted on the third Sunday of the month. Check their website for information about annual memberships.
While we were visiting, The World Reflected was on display, and it will be up until October 28th

We had lunch at the Spalding House Cafe, and we both ordered the soup, salad, and sandwich. The soup of the day was black bean and green chili, and the roasted veggie sandwich is pictured above. The soup was particularly tasty!

There was a baby shower going on in the cafe that day. It’s the perfect venue for a shower, with reasonably priced food and a relaxing atmosphere.
You can also opt to have a picnic on the lawn of the Spalding House with food provided from the cafe. For $20, you can choose one item from a large menu of salads, sandwiches, or a mezze platter. It also comes with one drink and a dessert. They provide the picnic basket and mat. This could be the definition of a perfect daytime date!
After lunch, you can explore the garden and enjoy all of the outdoor sculptures.
