I’ve stopped by the Rainbow Drive Inn in Kalihi a few times, and I’ve been curious about the Aloha Cones shop right next door. I thought it would be a great place to check out for lunch on the weekend, so I stopped by this past Saturday.
They had a great selection of different poke and sashimi that you could order as a bowl served over sushi rice or as a salad with romaine lettuce, tomatoes, and cucumbers. I opted for the Wasabi Masago Ahi Poke rice bowl. The fish was mixed with sesame oil, wasabi oil, Hawaiian sea salt, green onion, and masago (smelt roe). I was impressed with the fresh fish, as well as the blend of flavors. I also really liked the crab salad that accompanied the poke. I ordered the regular size, but it also comes in a mini version for $8.
I also brought home an order of somen to eat later. For $6, you get a good size serving of somen noodles topped with crab salad, tomato, cucumber, edamame, and green onion. It also comes with an Asian dressing. I think I already mentioned how good that crab salad is, so this was definitely a win. At $6, you can’t go wrong if you order this for lunch.
