What is Poke?

Poke (pronounced “poh-kay”) is a traditional Hawaiian dish that typically consists of diced raw fish, often tuna or salmon, that is marinated in a variety of seasonings. The dish has become popular worldwide, especially as a customizable bowl that can include a variety of ingredients. In Hawai’i, you can find poke sold at super markets and other food establishments that specialize in poke.

Common ingredients in a poke bowl include:

  • Raw fish (like tuna, salmon, or even octopus)
  • Soy sauce or shoyu (for marinating the fish)
  • Sesame oil
  • Scallions (green onions)
  • Seaweed (like wakame or nori)
  • Rice (usually sushi rice or brown rice)
  • Vegetables like avocado, cucumbers, or radishes
  • Pickled ginger, sesame seeds, or chili flakes for extra flavor and crunch

Today’s recipe is great for those times when you want to change up the usual poke bowl and maybe eliminate rice from a meal. You could also make this without somen noodles, if you’re looking for a low carb option.
