Mama’s Fish House

Mahi Mahi, Opah, and Ahi in Panang Curry $58

On a recent trip to Maui, our friend Katie took us to Mama’s Fish House in Paia for lunch on a Saturday afternoon. I fell in love with the food, and it has become my favorite fancy, but not fancy restaurant. It serves the most amazing seafood, but has the most casual vibes. It’s right on the beach, and we were all in shorts and tees. You can definitely dress a little nicer (think sundress and aloha shirts), but you won’t be out of place if you walk in after a day of exploring the island.

Pictured above was my delicious curry. Served with toasted coconut, banana, sambal, and mango chutney, it was rich and delicious. I definitiely recommend it to anyone who is a fan of Thai curry and coconut milk.

Macadamia Nut Crab Cakes $24
Shrimp Won Tons $22

Before I get too far ahead of myself, I should mention that we had some delicious appetizers to start. I’m just going to say that I would recommend all of the dishes we ordered. Everyone was extremely happy and satisfied with their choices.

Mama’s Stuffed Fish with lobster and crab in a macadamia nut crust $60
Opah with carmelized Maui onions, Hawaiian chili pepper, and avocado $58
Braised Short Ribs $46

My friends and I don’t do meals without dessert, so we each ordered a different treat. Although they were all delicious, I will say that the Polynesian Black Pearl was the most Instagramworthy of the desserts.

Polynesian Black Pearl, lilikoi chocolate mousse in a pastry seashell $18
Kuau Chocolate Pie, baked in a caramel cookie crust $16
Hana Banana Crisp served with Tahitian vanilla ice cream $16

Now that you’ve drooled over so many amazing food pictures, I’m going to say that we were blown away by the flower arrangements at Mama’s. Take a look and let me know what you think.

I cannot recommend this place enough. We had excellent service, amazing food, and the setting was absolutely beautiful. Like I said, it’s my favorite fancy, not fancy restaurant. I’ll need to plan another trip to Maui to indulge in their deliciousness. If you’ve been, let me know what you thought of it!
